Everyone has a library management system. I was recently amazed by how many companies there are providing so many products. We all know how they work. They allow you and your students to search for a topic and find all the books in your library on that topic. But what if they could see results from your online databases as well? This is what a federated search does.
One search on your library system will not only show you books on your shelf but also show you what all of your online databases have on that topic. It is time-saving, to say the least. How do you get this on your library system? Well, that is the tricky part. All the systems out there do it differently. Even the same system offered by two different companies will have a different way to set it up. I was going to do some training videos on how to do this yourself, but as they are all different, it was not possible. So all you have to do is contact your library management provider and ask them to set it up for you. Most of the time, it is included with your package, but sometimes, you will find it's an extra cost. Then, just give them your school's username and password, and they will set it up for you. If they ask you any technical questions, just direct them to us, and we will help them. If you are looking at a new system in the future, then just ask if it is included. We no longer just depend on books. So, being able to search online databases and your library at the same time is a useful way to help your library patrons quickly find what they are looking for. If for some reason your system does not do a federated search or the extra cost is too much, then ask about MARC records. At the bottom of each of our 18 databases, you will find a link to download the mark records, which can then be uploaded into your library management system.
If you are already using federated search in your school, please make a comment below on what system you're using and what you think of it.
